Artwork Guide: Preparing Logos for Large Format Printing
Every week in the shop, we meet local business owners who have spent time designing a great logo, only to find that it comes out blurry on a large banner or looks fuzzy when printed on a massive outdoor display sign. It is an incredibly common problem, but it is also very easy to fix once you understand what happens behind the scenes.
When you are investing in large format display signage, PVC banners, or vinyl window graphics, starting with the right artwork file makes all the difference. Let us walk through the most common artwork problems and how to solve them so your brand always looks sharp and professional.
Problem 1: Pixelated Files and Raster Images
Most images found on the web, such as JPEGs or PNGs, are made up of thousands of tiny coloured squares called pixels. When you enlarge these images to fit across a wide banner or onto an outdoor display sign, those pixels stretch. The result is a fuzzy, pixelated logo that looks jagged around the edges.
The Solution: Vector Files
Vector artwork uses mathematical points rather than pixels to build shapes. This means you can scale a vector graphic to the size of a billboard or shrink it down without losing a single drop of quality. Common vector file formats end in EPS, SVG, PDF, or AI.
Problem 2: Screenshots from Social Media or Mobile Phones
It is tempting to grab a screenshot of your logo from Facebook or a phone screen and email it over. However, mobile devices compress images heavily to save storage space. A file that looks clear on a small phone screen will rarely contain enough digital detail for high quality large format display printing.
The Solution: Original Source Files
Always request the original master files from your original graphic designer. If you do not have access to these files, ask your designer for a high resolution print ready file, or let our in house design team redraw your logo into vector format for you.
Problem 3: Low Resolution Files for Large Displays
Large format printers print at physical dimensions measuring metres across. If your source image is low resolution, the software stretching the file across large display boards or vinyl graphics will produce visible blurriness, dulling the visual impact of your branding.
The Solution: Clean Lines and High DPI
Providing crisp vector files or high resolution artwork with high dots per inch ensures the printing machinery maps out razor sharp details. This results in clean, vibrant, professional displays on banners, posters, and signage.
Problem 4: Colour Mismatches Between Screens and Printed Banners
Have you ever noticed that a colour on your computer screen looks slightly different when printed on vinyl or mesh banners? Computer monitors use red, green, and blue light to show colours, whereas commercial large format print machinery uses physical inks.
The Solution: Pantone Colour Matching
If your brand uses specific corporate colours, specify your Pantone codes when submitting artwork. This gives our team an exact physical colour standard to match against inks, keeping your brand identity consistent across all printed display materials.
